I was invited by Joanie, as a guest blogger, to shed some light on the school enrollment process for your family's children. Let me start by thanking you for all the work you do with our families! Their experience with you will enhance their journey to self sufficiency and cultivate their confidence. This guide to school enrollment is intended to ease some undue stress often caused by uncertainty felt by family and often times by the volunteer.
- IRC sends overseas health records for the entire family to the RN at Central District Health Department (CDHD) (emphasis on "the", as there is only one nurse assigned to serve over 900 refugees per year!)
- Health screenings and immunizations are scheduled are administered by the RN at CDHD once a review of health records is complete. Keep in mind: this appointment is typically scheduled at about 30 days upon CDHD receiving paperwork. However, school registration may be scheduled based on a confirmed immunization appointment.
- At this time, paperwork is sent to the English Language Learners (ELL) Enrollment Specialist at the Boise School District.
- Registration is scheduled promptly. This is the fun part! Registration is so exciting for the kids. You are more than welcome to attend this appointment with your family.
- At the time of registration, the children will receive a backpack and school supplies. A transportation request is completed by the school. Bus scheduling may take up to 5 business days.
Please let Joanie know if you have any questions or concerns. I'm happy to help you better understand the enrollment process further.
