Hello Volunteers!
Where did the summer go?? It’s time once again for our after-school program at the Boise Language Academy, and I have a wonderful opportunity for you to help refugee youth (ages 12 to 15) succeed in school and integrate into our community.
There are a few changes to the program this year, principally the 30 minutes of required homework help / tutoring for all students. So I need help from lots of volunteers.
BLA After-School Program schedule is as follows:
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
2:30 – 2:45 – Snack provided through the school lunch program.
2:45 – 3:15 – Homework help / tutoring This is done one on one or in very small groups.
For those students who do not have specific tutoring needs or homework that
day, volunteers will help them use Rosetta Stone or other English learning
programs in the computer lab, or other practice with English.
3:15 – 4:15 - Classes / Activities such as sports, music, art, science experiments computer
keyboarding, knitting, yoga, drumming, bike maintenance, etc.
Volunteers can assist the teachers by helping individuals, setting up materials,
or just participating alongside the kids as role models. Classes / activities
are taught by Boise Parks & Rec, Ada County 4-H, YMCA, the school, and other
community volunteers.
We have divided the year into 6-week sessions:
Sept. 9 – Oct. 15 (no program on Thurs., Oct. 1)
Oct. 27 – Dec. 10 (no program the week of Thanksgiving)
Feb. 2 – March 11
If you can help out one afternoon a week, even if it is only for the tutoring portion, I really need your help. Or if you can help for one six-week session, that’s great too! If you can help with the tutoring / homework help and have not volunteered with the youth program before, there is an orientation I would like to you to attend. We can arrange it for a time that is convenient for you.
Please contact me either by email (ellen.albus@theirc.org) or phone (344-1792) to volunteer for this rewarding and fun opportunity.
Thank you!
