Free English Language Training for Volunteers

IRC Boise has recently formed a partnership with Intercambio.
It’s a new organization that has expanded from Colorado to Boise. It matches volunteer English teachers with adult immigrants. Intercambio Boise is hosting a training for volunteers on teaching English to adult immigrants starting very soon and volunteers with the IRC are welcome! We are so happy about this training and urge you to consider taking advantage of this opportunity!

The training is five hours long and will be two consecutive Tuesdays in October (October 6th and October 13th) from 6-8:30 pm. It will be held at the home of the Director for Intercambio Boise, Christina McAlpin. She lives in the North End and will send the address and directions to people when they RSVP.

The training has been developed to give volunteers who want to teach English the concrete skills to give high-quality English instruction without previous training or experience as a teacher. It is structured to cover a range of both principles and practical skills for teaching English to adults. It is designed to be highly interactive and fun, with many opportunities for participants to share, ask questions, and practice the teaching skills taught in the training.

The training will cover the following:
- 7 principles of teaching adults English
- The role of culture in communication and some guidelines for teaching English to refugees
- How to structure lessons with a focus of each lesson on one new language skill (often either vocabulary or grammar)
- How to structure a complete lesson with Review, Introduce new topic, Practice, Application, and Review
- How to teach new vocabulary
- How to teach new grammar
- How to teach pronunciation
- The importance and ideas for using Realia (real-world objects)
- Using field trips for teaching English
- Teaching the four language skills of Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking and activities to practice them
- Information about Intercambio and using the Intercambio teacher and student books
- Information about the Intercambio matching process (volunteers who are already matched with clients through the IRC can leave when we begin this part of the training)

Please call Christina McAlpin at 208-342-0859 if you have any questions about the training. You can RSVP by email at
christinamcalpin@yahoo.com. Christina is very accessible and has a fun, thoughtful approach to teaching! Thanks!
