With her permission, I'm sharing a great idea from Amber Schwehr, a new volunteer. This entry is from her case notes:
"At some point in our conversation that day, Mrs. Ibrahim and I started to talk about herbs, vegetables, and gardening. She could not believe that we could actually grow things here! Before I left, I told her that I would like to stop by later in the day to bring her some herbs from my garden. She agreed that we could return at 4:00."
"At 4:00, my children and I returned to find several Somali families waiting to see what things we were bringing from our garden! We took some old pots and potting soil and after a short tutorial, Mr. and Mrs. Ibrahim were soon planting away surrounded by about a dozen curious neighbors! It was so great! Now, they have a small herb garden started on the patio! We munched on chives, parsley, mint, and cilantro....it was amazing!"
Please send us your ideas! Small ideas = BIG hits!!
