Boise Bicycle Project Special Announcement
June 18th 2009

We Got the Building!
As you know, we have been in the process of signing a 5-year lease with an option to purchase on a new Building. Well we got it! The new building is on 1027 Lusk St. and is literally 100 yards from the Greenbelt and Ann Morrison Park.
The Grand Opening will be on Saturday July 11th 11-6pm.
Human Powered Bike Move- Saturday June 27th 11-5pm.
We have over 250 bicycles that need to be moved to the new shop, and why haul ‘em over when we could ride ‘em? On June 27th, all humans are invited to participate in the Human Powered Bike Move. In a about an 1 hour everyone should be able to ride two bikes to the new shop, and enjoy a couple of nice strolls on the Greenbelt on the way back. We’re trying to get at least 100 people to help out, so grab your bikes, bike trailers, and all your friends and join us for a nice little .9 mile ride/walk.
***Plus all Human Powered participants can get $10 off any level of BBP Membership.
http://boisebicycleproject.org/Membership.html,
Meet at BBP’s old shop (6th and Front St) anytime from 11am - 5pm. Helmets are strongly encouraged for all bike transporters.

Truck and Trailer Move- Friday June 26th
We wish we had enough “utility cycles” to haul everything (tool benches, shelves, tables) over, but alas we do not. So we need help from anyone with trucks or trailers that can help with some of the big stuff. We will be moving non-bicycle transportable stuff all day on Friday We’ll still give you the membership discounts from the Human powered move.
If you can help please email us so we can get all of the times setup.

New Shop needs
Funding. We still need some funding for the big move, our largest need is some industrial strength shelving like the stuff you see at Home Depot for multi-level bike storage. There is some at Pacific Recycling that we’re trying to raise $300 for. This is a special price they offered us for the good things we do. You can help raise the money by becoming a BBP member (see above link).
Recycling containers and other large durable non-cardboard boxes. In about a month all of Boise will be getting new trash containers, BBP needs your old plastic recycling containers for storing and transporting parts.
Heavy Duty Shelving
Lumber 2x4s and 2x6s
Heavy Duty Wall Hooks

Cute Story - GREAT Idea!!

With her permission, I'm sharing a great idea from Amber Schwehr, a new volunteer. This entry is from her case notes:

"At some point in our conversation that day, Mrs. Ibrahim and I started to talk about herbs, vegetables, and gardening. She could not believe that we could actually grow things here! Before I left, I told her that I would like to stop by later in the day to bring her some herbs from my garden. She agreed that we could return at 4:00."

"At 4:00, my children and I returned to find several Somali families waiting to see what things we were bringing from our garden! We took some old pots and potting soil and after a short tutorial, Mr. and Mrs. Ibrahim were soon planting away surrounded by about a dozen curious neighbors! It was so great! Now, they have a small herb garden started on the patio! We munched on chives, parsley, mint, and cilantro....it was amazing!"

Please send us your ideas! Small ideas = BIG hits!!

Fun Stuff for the Weekend of May 2

There were several things posted in the newspaper over the weekend that are little or no cost. It might be fun to check these out with your families:

  • Family Pet Expo at Expo Idaho May 2-3 starting at 10AM Adults-$2 and kids under 12 are free! If you bring an ad from the newspaper, it's good for a $1 discount! There's a pet talent show on Saturday at 2pm and a best dressed pet contest on Sunday at 2pm.
  • Sampler Expo at Expo Idaho May 2-3 starting at 10AM also. The prices are the same as above and the same thing re: the discount with an ad from the paper. It looks like a lot of fun stuff to see and I'm sure free samples of food as well!
  • Neighborhood Block Party in Meridian on May 2, starting at 10AM. Admission is free and it benefits the Meridian Police K-9 Team. 4037 E. Clocktower Lane in Meridian. "Food sampling" is specifically stated.

Also....this looks fun for Saturday, May 9: Arch Re-Painting Party and Storytime. 11AM to 2PM at Cassia Park, 4600 W. Camas Steet, here in Boise. "Help repaint Michael Zapponi's archway. Volunteers will read new stories every half hour. Call 433-5677 for details."

Please post here if you have some additional ideas!

GREAT Local Resource - Our Public Library

One of the first things I ask volunteers to do is check out the Boise Public Library with their families. Showing them how to get to the library on the bus is really be a plus!

www.boisepubliclibrary.org

The majority of our families live near the Hillcrest branch, but that doesn't mean that a trip to the main library shouldn't happen. It would be great to families get a library card at the main library and then have a "field trip" to the Hillcrest branch, on another day. Making the connection between the main library and the branch should come pretty easily.

The library site is great because it gives a monthly calendar of events for the main library and the branches too. I have seen events such as toddler and pre-school story time, teen game hour, computer basics, and several other programs from which our families would benefit.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out. If you have taken advantage of this great resource, write about it here!
